MP3 bitrate guide: 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbps?
When you convert audio to MP3 you choose a bitrate in kilobits per second (kbit/s, often written kbps). It is the single setting that decides how big the file is and how much detail it keeps. Here is what the numbers mean and how to pick one without wasting storage.
What bitrate means
MP3 is a compressed format: it throws away sounds that are hardest to hear to save space. The bitrate is how much data is spent on each second of audio. At 128 kbit/s the encoder has to discard more than at 320 kbit/s, so fine detail, especially in high frequencies and busy passages, can suffer.
File size at each bitrate
| Bitrate | Per minute | 3-minute song | 1-hour podcast |
|---|---|---|---|
| 128 kbit/s | ≈ 1.0 MB | ≈ 2.9 MB | ≈ 58 MB |
| 192 kbit/s | ≈ 1.4 MB | ≈ 4.3 MB | ≈ 86 MB |
| 256 kbit/s | ≈ 1.9 MB | ≈ 5.8 MB | ≈ 115 MB |
| 320 kbit/s | ≈ 2.4 MB | ≈ 7.2 MB | ≈ 144 MB |
Sizes are approximate (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) and assume a constant bitrate, which is what ClipZen produces at the quality you choose.
Which bitrate should you choose?
Speech, lectures and podcasts: 128 kbit/s
Voices do not need much data. 128 kbit/s keeps speech clear and files small.
Everyday music: 192 kbit/s
A sensible default, and the one ClipZen preselects. Most listeners on ordinary headphones or speakers find it hard to tell from higher settings, although results vary with the music, the equipment and the person.
Careful listening or archiving: 256 or 320 kbit/s
Choose these if you listen on good equipment, plan to edit the audio later, or simply prefer the margin and do not mind bigger files.
The source limits the result
An MP3 cannot be better than the audio it was made from. If the original track was already compressed at about 130 kbit/s, an MP3 at 320 kbit/s is just a bigger copy of the same sound. When ClipZen knows the source bitrate it tells you, so you can pick the quality that actually makes sense.

Frequently asked questions
Is 320 kbps always better than 192 kbps?
It keeps more data, but whether you can hear the difference depends on the music, your equipment and your ears. If the source audio has a lower bitrate, 320 kbps adds nothing.
What bitrate is best for podcasts?
128 kbit/s is usually plenty for speech.
Does a higher bitrate make the conversion slower?
The difference is small compared with downloading and processing the video.
What is the default quality in ClipZen?
192 kbit/s. You can choose 128, 192, 256 or 320 kbit/s.
